Advantages and disadvantages of functional or traditional cervical lymph node dissection for differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Abstract:

The prognosis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is favorable, while cervical lymph node metastasis is quite common. The metastasis is a high-risk factor for recurrence with poor prognosis of DTC. Appropriate cervical lymph node dissection is essential for DTC treatment. The indications, range and surgical procedures still remained controversial, both inadequate and excessive treatment are still ubiquitous. Therefore, it is vital to apply the proper way of cervical dissection to improve survival rate and life quality of patients with DTC.
