Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound guided core needle biopsy (CNB) for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules.

Methods

From June 2009 to June 2016, 2286 thyroid nodules from 2051 patients undergoing ultrasound guided CNB (US-CNB) in our department and 530 nodules undergoing surgical operation were included in this study. Final diagnosis was confirmed by surgical pathological results. The data were analyzed using SPSS19.0 software. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy were calculated, and ROC curve was used to compare the CNB and the surgical pathological results.

Results

The biopsy samples were successfully obtained from 2284 nodules (2284/2286), and the inconclusive result occurred in 2 nodules (2/2286). The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of US-CNB in the 530 nodules were 99.8%, 86.5%, 98.6%, 97.8%, and 98.5%, respectively.

Conclusion

US-CNB has high success rates and diagnostic accuracy; therefore, it is a useful tool for the preoperative diagnosis of thyroid nodules.
