Abstract:

Laparoscopic metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) in China started 20 years ago. After more than 10 years of incubation, it has entered the early stage of rapid development, which is marked by the rapid growth of the number of hospitals and doctors involved and the rapid growth of annual operation volume. During the past 20 years, MBS operations were mainly standard operations in China. In recent years, however, some new surgical procedures have also been carried out in some centers. During the early time of development in China, MBS was under the framework of Chinese Association of EndocrineSurgery for quality control and standardization. In 2012, the first professional academic organization, the Chinese Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (CSMBS) was established. Since then, a few other national professional societies have been established, which has greatly promoted the awareness of MBS in the public. From the earliest Chinese Association of EndocrineSurgeryto the present, a number of clinical practice guidance documents have been formulated, which plays an important role in the regulation ofstandardized development of MBS. So far, MBS is still an emerging discipline in China. In the coming years, clinical data collection, clinical research, systematic structuredtraining, clinical quality control and patient safety improvement need to be continuously emphasized to promote the healthy development of MBS, and ultimately provide better quality and safer medical care for patients with obesity and obesity related diseases.
